Stuttgart’s oldest surviving cemetery is now a historic park with numerous grave monuments. Some stones were moved during later redesigns, so a visible monument does not always mark the original burial position.
Founded during a plague epidemic in 1626, Hoppenlau Cemetery received its present name in 1828. The last coffin burial took place in 1880; the final urn interment ended operations in 1951. The grounds were redesigned as a park for the 1961 garden exhibition.
