Caring for historic monuments
Hoppenlau Cemetery is a historic park. Burials ended in 1951, so caring for a surviving monument differs from maintaining a present-day burial plot.
Many sandstone surfaces are weathered and their inscriptions fragile or difficult to read. Between 2012 and 2024, 1,674 monuments underwent conservation. Well-intentioned cleaning can damage this historic material. Obtain guidance from the responsible authority before cleaning, planting or structural work.
Preparing an enquiry
Record the name and dates on the monument, take an overview photograph and describe its location. State the issue precisely: a damaged inscription, a loose part, encroaching vegetation or a question about historical identification. Do not move stones or fragments yourself.
The cemetery administration can direct the enquiry to the responsible department. Telephone: +49 711 21698252.
Help finding a monument
If the location is still unknown, start with grave search. An enquiry to a private provider does not replace any consent needed for work on historic monuments.
Visiting and recording
The visitor address is Rosenbergstraße 7, 70174 Stuttgart. Stay on paths while taking notes or photographs and do not touch the monuments. The map supports orientation; it establishes a particular historic grave location only where that grave is explicitly recorded.
